Bits of Bulgarian History for Beginners...

In the ancient Bulgarian chronology, there were periods of 3, 10, 12, 17, 19, 21, 30, 47, 50, 53, 300, 600, 4332, etc. ancient Bulgarian years which were used both as denominators and intervals of time. The longest one was of 6328 ancient Bulgarian years. It is mentioned in the fragmentary inscription of Khan Omurtag and refers to the year 823 AD. The text consists of 14 lines, probably the concluding part of a contract between Danube Bulgaria and Byzantium. The inscription is carved with beautiful letters on a marble stone believed to be from the capital town of Pliska. It says: “[…of the ruler] the name is [Khan Omurtag Juvigi]. The year of the appearance of the true god was 6328. They made a sacrifice and they swore in the written in the books [mutual contracts]…” This historic source may be accepted as a proof of the early beginning of the chronology of Bulgarians. According to the counts the new year, 2003 AD, is the year 7508 of the ancient Bulgarian chronology. Thus, the Bulgarians are among the peoples with the most ancient system of measuring time – a fact, which indicates their early civilising force.

"...The Bulgarian royal title 'Tsar' derived from the Gothic 'kaisar'..."

In 811 Nicephorus [ Byzantine emperor (802-811) ] invaded Bulgaria... but in a night attack on July 26, the Bulgarian Tsar (emperor/king) Krum surprised and slain Nicephorus along with a large portion of the Byzantine army. Krum is said to have made a drinking-cup of Nicephorus's skull...

"...The Old Bulgarian literary language helped the independent development of the Bulgarians. This took place at a time when the greater part of Mediaeval Europe had no national literary languages and made use of Latin and Greek. The Bulgarian script spread on the basis of a rich folklore heritage..."

"...The peculiar Bulgatian-Byzantine symbiosis, which is of late frequently mentioned in historiographical studies, gave birth to an entirely new civilization-the Eastern Orthodox..."

"...Bulgaria had a beneficial influence on the initial development of the Russian state. Bulgaria sent missionaries to Russia when Russia adopted Christianity in 988, and Old Bulgarian became the official state and religious language of Russia in the eleventh century..."

"In 893 the Byzantines decided to move the market for Bulgarian goods out of Constantinople to Thessaloniki. There, the Bulgarian tradesmen would have to pay higher taxes. The war that followed (the first war in Europe fought solely over economic differences) ended after the Bulgarians crushed the Byzantines in 896 near Bulgarophygon in Eastern Thrace. The market was returned to Constantinpole and the Byzantine Emperor had to pay annual tribute to Bulgaria. After a series of battles the border of the Bulgarian state was within twenty kilometers of Thessaloniki. "

Thank you for posting this, I love history and I find this very interesting. I wish I could learn more about European history in school, but learning Virginian/American history is required to graduate here, which I think is absurd. I will check out those links you posted, hopefully I will be able to read them. If its in Bulgarian, maybe you could give me a short translation? Anyway, I will be looking more up on this and I hope to hear from you.

do not rebel against Virginian/American, if it weren't required, you'd be interested in it one day wither way... one is always interested in his roots... or how his ancestors...

unfortunately Bulgarian history was interrupted for 5 centuries (the otoman empire)... then 5 decades later (communists)... but the rest of our history is pure glory :) :) :)

Middle Ages in not the only interesting period in our history.

of course it's not been all roses and champagne, but i guess the lows are to learn from, and the highs are to truly cherish..and learn from...and try to top.
